Mechanical Sewing Machines Offer Creativity and Simplicity

Since 1853, Singer sewing machines have offered innovative designs in practical packages to help seamstresses of all skill levels create their own clothing and decorate their own homes. While the basic Singer 3116 Simple Sewing Machine offers few modern bells and whistles, its performance, reliability and simple controls make it the perfect choice for beginners, but it is still sturdy enough for seasoned sewers.

The machine includes all the necessary features to tackle any project, including automatic needle threading, pressure adjusting, and four presser feet. It is also comes equipped with 18 built-in stitch patterns, an unlimited number of stitch functions, adjustable stitch length control and fixed stitch width control. The machine is stocked with a standard Class 15 plastic bobbin.

Beginners will also be grateful for the included seam guide, seam ripper, and one-step buttonhole. At a mere 15 pounds, this lightweight, low-profile sewing machine is portable and will store neatly into any cabinet.

Similar in form, function and price, the basic Kenmore sewing machine is also compact, portable and lightweight at 14 pounds. The 19112 model features a drop feed, snap on/off fixed footings and standard 25-year warranty. It also has a resin bobbin, comes with an adjustable stitch width control and offers three needle bar positions at center, left and right, compared to the Singer machine fixed center position. The easy drop-in bobbin is horizontal and top-loading.

The Kenmore machine does come up a little short in certain features, providing only 12 built-in stitches, a limit of 58 stitch functions, a four-step buttonhole and a fixed pressure adjustment on the feeding system. But, none of this affects the machine consistency in producing balanced stitches and its ability to tackle even the toughest of fabrics, including denim.

Brother started production on its first sewing machine back in 1908. More serious sewing hobbyists will appreciate the versatile Brother XL-3750 machine, which offers 72 built-in stitch functions and 35 decorative stitch patterns and can produce 800 stitches per minute. Several stitches are even illustrated on the side of the arm. Sewers also have control over stitch length and width. Quilters will enjoy the built-in quilting stitches and quilt guide, as well as the oversized table attachment and walking foot.

The easy to use machine is outfitted with an automatic needle threader, built-in thread cutter and attachment for quickly sewing on buttons. The drop-in bobbin offers a view of the thread supply and has an automatic winding system. Mending is also a simple task with the built-in hem stitcher and convertible free-arm sewing surface.

The machine is equipped with seven snap-on presser feet accessories and offers several needle positions, including a twin needle option for decorative stitches. Weighing in at nearly 19 pounds, this Brother sewing machine has an integrated handle for easy transport and a cloth carrying case.
