Serger Machines for Special Sewing and Stitching Jobs

Skilled sewers appreciate a serger machine's ability to quickly and efficiently trim, then enclose a seam or cuff in a strong, stretchable thread casing that gives homemade clothing a professional look. Sergers can also create intricate ruffles and gatherings, belt loops and piped seams. Used as a companion piece for traditional sewing machines, most sergers are equipped with settings that allow users to adjust stitch length, width and density. Higher-end models will offer more options, such as different types of stitches and the number of threads that can be used at one time.

Kenmore's entry-level serger sewing machines offer an impressive 1,300 stitches per minute with its two-needle system. Novices will be able to get straight to work using the instructional DVD, the easy-to-read, color-coded thread chart and the snap-on standard serger pressure foot that is adjustable. Additional attachments can be purchased separately, including a blind stitch foot, cloth guide and gathering attachment. It also allows users to sew with decorative, coarser threads, such as yarn.

One of the most respected names in the sewing industry, Singer produces two comparable machines with the Stylist Serger and the 3/4 Thread Serger. The Stylist, which weighs a meager 13 pounds, offers a 2-3-4 stitch configuration and is equipped with six built-in stitches, including blind and rolled hems, flatlocking and overlocking. Like the Kenmore, the Singer machines have a handy color-coded threading system, adjustable settings for the thread tension and knife width. The machines also produce 1,300 stitches per minute.

The unique differential feed on Singer machines helps eliminate stretching and puckering, while the Stylist's free arm makes serging cuffs and sleeves easy even for beginners. The stitch settings can also be adjusted for length and width to keep seams strong. Standard accessories include a needle set, tweezers, spreader and screwdriver. A sewing techniques guide that is easy to understand is also included in the box.
