Ran great but then started leaking oil

I bought the Kenmore Elite stand mixer with a gift card I got from my wedding.  I've been wanting a Kitchenaid stand mixer for a long time.  I found this online and read a lot of reviews.  There was a little bit of everything, most of the negative reviews were about leaking oil.  But I'm cheap and decided to buy the kenmore, b/c it was cheaper but higher wattage motor than the basic to middle range kitchenaid, came with 2 different size bowls and bonus of the LED light shining into the bowl.  The 1st package I bought I opened it immediately to use that night.  There was oil leaking on the plastic wrapping sitting below the mixer attachment.  I cleaned it up and used it anyway because I needed it.  It didn't leak oil during the process, but it had a smell of slight burning. (like the 1st time you use your toaster in a long time).  I returned it a few days later back to sears and decided to give it one more chance.  Sears was very good about the exchange.  Opened that one and no oil leaking! (July 2011) I used it quite a bit, for cookies, cakes, potatoes, cheesecakes...More often arount the recent holidays.  I'd say around 9 or 10/11 every time I got it out it had a little oil leaking from I think a little screw right above where you'd attach the wisk or paddle.  I'd wipe it away and use it and it didn't leak oil by the time i'd finished.  I'd put it away and by the time i got it out again few days to a week or more it would have the small amount of oil leaking.  It still worked fine, sounded good and didn't smell but I didn't want to take the risk years down the road the motor burning up.  So the other day (1/2/12) I returned it back to sears.  They still didn't have a problem returning it 6 months later.  I contemplated buying another kenmore but I tried twice.  So i'm buying the kitchenaid pro 6 qt 600 series off sears website.  I was afraid to go with the lower watts with the artisan mixer.  (600 series has 575 vs kenmore's 400)

I loved using the Kenmore mixer though.  Didn't have any issues with power.  Other reviewers said it was very loud.  I did not think it was very loud at all for being a mixer.  Seemed to mix all my goodies with out any struggle.   Not that I wouldn't recommend this to anyone else but for sure keep your reciept.  Maybe I just had 2 duds in a row.

BETTER than Kitchen Aid

This little beauty does everything my Mom's Kitchen Aid mixer can, plus it'll lock into both positions and it has a light, so you can actually see what's going on in the bowl! Not to mention it comes with two different size bowls, and the larger one has a handle.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great mixer

We recently decided to purchase this mixer. We love the 5 qt and 3 qt bowls. We have made breads, cookies and icings. Everything works great 400 watt motor is very strong. The one thing I do not like about this mixer is, its very loud when mixing, it is very ear piercing. I wish I had not purchased this just for that reason.

Overall
works very well

Had concerns about the head moving up and down during kneading, but learned from a kitchen aid salesperson that this is normal, even the KA artisan and cheaper does this. Bought a KA attachment (juicer) and it works great. Only 4 stars because trying to get advise from Sears/Kenmore was impossible.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Completely happy

This mixer exceeded my expectations. I love making bread now. Making 3 loaves at a time definitely takes it to the max (6 qt would probably be better for 3 loaves) but the end result has been incredible. My husband loves my mixer too! One tip I would give bread makers is to use the dough hook for kneading and let it work until all the dough is pulled off the side of the bowl. That's what I've done and have gotten excellent results. I love it that the low speed does not throw flour out of the bowl. The noise level seems normal to me. The price point and warranty are a huge bonus.
