Great Buy for a Subaru Outback! December 21, 2010

Purchased for a 2005 Subaru Outback. Installation is a breeze, need to people to lift it on to the roof because of its size, but one person can manage it after than. Perfect length for the car; it doesn't get in the way of the sunroof or the tailgate, and accessing the topper by standing on the back bumper is very comfortable. Driven over 2,000 miles with it and didn't even notice it was on the car, even on some windy days through the mountains! The height of the topper really makes it versatile. Great value, too! Some feedback said that the nuts strip easily, but I didn't feel like it needed to be really overtightened to stay on...just 1/4 turn over snug, and it didn't budge. I could also see how the hinges could break if you're overly enthusiastic about opening and closing the lid, but a little tenderness while operating should keep anything from warping or breaking.

OK-about what you would expect for the price-NOT water tight! April 03, 2011

This product installs quickly and easily. I didn't have any problems with the installation. It is a very light duty item and must be handled accordingly. If you are careful with this product, it should last a long time. I can see how one false or careless move could damage or break the hinges.

My biggest problem with this product is that it is NOT water tight. I figured this would be an obvious requirement for this type of product. We saw heavy rain during our travel and noticed there was some standing water in the carrier and some of our beach towels were wet. I dried the entire inside. Later, after a rain during which our car was parked, I noticed water had again gotten into the carrier. Based on this performance and since there are not any gaskets to make the carrier water tight, I would expect this performance to be the norm.

We didn't put anything valuable or easily damaged by water in the carrier, mostly pool toys, scooters, towels, and beach chairs. For us, this was an inconvenience, not a big problem.

I'm going to try and install some weathering gasket purchased from the local hardware store. This should work or at least reduce the water infiltration.

Overall this product is OK. About what you would expect for the price. In hindsight, I might consider one of the more expensive carriers from Thule or Yakima. Who knows, these may not be any better.

Great product and even greater customer services May 10, 2012
    By tsjalam of Quincy, MA

My purchase was intially canceled by Sears the next morning. I went to re-order but was charge the original price and not the sale price. But after I emailed customer services I was able to re-purchase my item without issue. Thanks, Imran! I'm glad I didn't let this offer slip me by. This carrier is huge, tons of space for my camping gear. I haven't use it yet but looking at the quality of the work I don't foresee any issues. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. Heck, for the price that I paid for it. If it break I'll buy a new one. I can't say the same for the other name brands that cost anywhere between 300 and up. Kudos to everyone from customer service!

Was raining sideways and everything stayed dry April 01, 2012
    By Tom-Kottwitz of Elmhurst, IL

Just returned from our Spring Break trip from Chicago to Nashville. About the time we hit Kankakee Il, it was raining so hard that that eventually I-57 was shutdown due to flash-flooding across both lanes. We were encountering high winds and the rain was hitting us so hard from all directions that we had to eventually pull off the road. After we detoured around the section, we finally got through the storm and I was able to check the contents of our carrier. To my surprise, we had a small amount of water in one corner and it turns out that was from a water bottle with a loose cap. I'd read of some concerns before about contents getting wet and I was quite surprised that we made it through that storm with no leakage. One suggestion that I have is to make sure the lid is fully secure once you close and lock it. There is a yellow tag in the back for this exact purpose and if the lid is not fully closed, the tag will still show. While locking it up, it took me a couple of jiggles before I was able to get it fully secure. Overall, for the price I highly recommend.

X-cargo car topper is all you could want! March 25, 2012
By MelissaKPThill of Saint Paul, MN

We read online comments and bought this for a cross country move. It performed better than we could ever hoped. Light weight, easy to move by two adults....it held SO much stuff. We made two enhancements....as per some other reviews, we covered the u-bolts with rubber tubing, and then used ratcheting across the top to secure it even more. It proved to be the perfect storage. There was no leakage , even in a driving rainstorm. It was not a huge drag on mileage, and looked. really sleek on our new Mazda C-X9. A packing note....we used Ikea blue bags for packing......another moisture barrier, and so easy to pack into the front end of the car topper. This is a definite 5 star rating, and the price was by far the best we found online, and a quick drive to our local Sears for pick up.

Better than expected. Much Much More Better than expected March 25, 2012
    By JPLonMars of Seattle, WA

After reading mixed reviews, I was a little worried. We actually got this from a second hand source (used) for only $75. So we don?t expect much. We went on a 11,000 miles road trip for 3 months (you heard it right, 3 countries, 14 states, 15 + national parks) it works great. This thing is HUGE. It?ll make your mid-sized SUV look like a toy car. (We have both mid size and big sized SUV but we drove big SUV for the aforementioned trip.) I did NOT notice any drop in my MPG nor do I noticed any extra noise. We have at least 75 pound (possible close to 125 pounds of stuff on it all the time) (it?s only rated at 100 pound though) and because it?s so huge, I have to lean on it to grab stuff on other end (and I weight almost 200 pound) so I am surprised that this thing hold up so well with all the weight on it) I did noticed a little water and sand got into it but that?s probably because the lock was broken when we got it. (again, we got it used) so there was a hole where the lock was. But it was not a big deal. It?s not like it flood or something. Nothing a few napkins won?t do. For us, This thing hold 2 full size 28? luggage and 2 big(18 gallon) plastic totes with rooms to spare! I did some calculation, this thing should hold about 7 average sized(21?) Carry on suite cases OR 3 to 4 full size (27?) checked luggage. Too bad that it wasn?t rectangular shaped. It would have hold even more bags if it was.
