Cleaning floors and furniture is now a simple process with the Kenmore Progressive canister vacuum. A 2-motor system, retractable cord storage, Stair Grip and variable speed settings make carpet and bare floor cleaning a cinch. This vacuum's true HEPA filter keeps pet dander and dust out of the air so you can breathe easy. From the 7-foot hose that swivels 360 degrees and reaches the highest surfaces to the Horsehair dusting brush for fine wooden furniture and floors, this vacuum has the tools to get the job done.

  • Designed to make cleaning-up after pets a cinch, the Pet PowerMate™ attachment lifts hair, dander and more from furniture, rugs and carpeting in seconds.
  • Ideal for all types of cleaning, the variable speed control lets you adjust the vacuuming speed based on the amount of dust and dirt you're picking up.
  • The exclusive Stair Grip™ feature keeps the canister body upright and securely in place while the stairs get cleaned, for solid performance and increased safety.
  • A 6-foot hose reaches from floor to ceiling, around corners and far beyond, so no matter where you need to clean, dirt cannot escape.
  • Quick to connect and featuring an array of attachments, the CrossOver Handle rapidly transitions the vacuum from carpet to flooring, crevice cleaning to pet hair pick-up.
  • The True HEPA certified filter can be trusted to remove almost all significant allergens from air flowing through the vacuum, so you can breathe easy.

It sucks!

Okay, we all saw that one coming!

We have had this vacuum for about a month now and our floors haven't been this clean for some time that's for sure!  My wife says it must be a great vacuum since the kids all seem to fight for it and are always vacuuming their rooms!  I suppose I should say thank you, Kenmore, for that !

Now, on to the review.

The good:

I like the power of this thing.  It is a 12 amp motor spinning the impeller and it creates more suction than I have seen in a vacuum cleaner in some time.

I can go from carpet to wood floors simply by turning off the brushes in the head.

It sits on the stairs allowing us to clean the carpet on the stairs (nice).

The Pet PowerMate and Pet Upholstery Tool actually work!  This is a big plus as we have a cat and a dog and they like the furniture!

Of all the features, my kids love the cord retraction system the most!

The bad:

It seems to take more effort than it should to get it to turn a corner.  The handle turns a lot before the head actually turns in the direction you want it to go so it isn't as effortless as it could be.  For me it is a design flaw that is easily forgotten when you look at all the positive aspects.

Most vacuum cleaners will allow you to lift the power head for whatever reason you may choose and this unit does not allow for that.  When the head is unlocked you can lay the handle on the floor and the head remains flat.  If you never have to lift the head you're golden, if you do (like the wife needed to today) then you're out of luck.

Summary:

I think, for the most part, Sears/Kenmore got this one right.  Aside from a couple of nit-picky complaints I liek the way the unit functions and my favorite feature is the "Exclusive Stair Grip" which is really just a piece of foam set at an angle but at least it shows someone who uses a vacuum was involved in the design of this thing!  It works and that is what's most important.

NOT new and improved!

Not happy with this vacuum...I have purchased 5 Kennmore Progressive canister vacs in the last 15 years. They were the BEST vacuum anyone could own. The older model, couldnt be "killed. The first one I purchased is still working! it is 15 years old...my son stole it from me about 7 years ago...I bought another and two years later my other son took that one...still working...this has happened 3 times. I purchased this one with great apprehension due to the obvious changes they made.  The wand is shorter, the wand is also wider, and the (couplings??) where the attachments go on are so big that they dont fit anywhere the old one did. (under dressers, behind furniture) The "easy release" foot thing  is so big that it catches on the bottom of the bed and disconnects the power-mate. It wont get into corners  the handle is not comfortable to hold...I could go on endlessly! I dont think the person who designed this vacuum ever used one. It LOOKS all pretty and "steamlined," but it is not functional. Perhaps if someone never experienced the previous model they will like it , but this vacuum was not made better. Lots of plastic...including the button that releases the attachments....(used to be metal) that little clip broke today...Ive had the unit for 3 months....will not be purchasing another!  Sears, you should have stuck with the Tried and True!

New changes wrong

My "old" Progressive Canister "died" and after fixing it two times I new I just needed a new one. I went to Sears to get a new one (same type) and, boy, was I surprised! The "new" hose on the Progressive Canister is too short and the ends are way wide. The current hose also looks like "plastic". With the hose shorter the canister will have to be pulled/carried most of the time now and I can just see the hose cracking as the canister is moves! Not only is the hose too short it is also too wide at the working end and now almost useless! With my last two Progressive Canister I would clean under shelves, behind the piano, etc... Now with a short, wind, plastic hose part of vacuum I won't be able to use it at all. This vacuum doesn't have as many attachments - no Crevice Tool, etc. Well, with the new style one could not use them anyway. I hope Sears CORRECT their errors. If you do I;ll get one again. As it is I don't even want to check the engine, amps, etc... I hate this because I've had two Progressive Canister's that have worked really well for over 20 years. With my two older canister I'd give them each 100% and more. With this new style I give it -000% Sorry Sears;-(

burning plastic smell and bag moves inside.

Need a vacuum,Don't buy this one!!!! the first one we tried smelled so bad of burning plastic,I was sure it was on fire. so I exchanged it for another. the same smell but not as strong. had it now for two weeks and stills smells like plastic burning. opened up to change the bag and found the bag had slid an half inch out of the holder, now I have to take my 15 yr old vac. to clean out the inside of the new. my wife fines it hard to keep holding back as the power head pulls foward on carpet when she does more than one room at a time.plan on returning it this week!!

Power issues made it unreliable

We chose this vac based on ratings in a highly respected consumer magazine and were very frustrated. It has so many built-in safeguards that power it off, that we couldn't get it to turn on. When it did power up it would turn off while it was running with no way of knowing where the problem was. We need something that we can count on in a rush so exchanged it for a less complicated model.

HORRIBLE VACUUM

Bought this item as a recommendation from a friend. When I first used it, it had very little suction. I brought it back to Sears, they said it was fine. Came back home, still hardly any suction...would never buy again.

Would not recommend

I researched this vacuum on Consumer Reports, which was highly recommended. I bought it in November, 2013. The hose is cheap and most recently, everytime I plug it in, it trips our circuit breaker. I have tried it in different rooms, with the same result. I plan to call the customer service center tomorrow as I tried to use it again this weekend. I miss my Electrolux vaccum that I had for 20+ years?
