Kenmore Progressive Canister Vacuum - Superior Cleaning

Cleaning floors and furniture is now a simple process with the Kenmore Progressive canister vacuum. A 2-motor system, retractable cord storage, Stair Grip and variable speed settings make carpet and bare floor cleaning a cinch. This vacuum's true HEPA filter keeps pet dander and dust out of the air so you can breathe easy. From the 7-foot hose that swivels 360 degrees and reaches the highest surfaces to the Horsehair dusting brush for fine wooden furniture and floors, this vacuum has the tools to get the job done.

  • The Infrared Dirt Sensor activates a red LED that tells you  where to focus cleaning power, then shines green once it's all clean.
  • Designed to make cleaning-up after pets a cinch, the Pet PowerMate™ attachment lifts hair, dander and more from furniture, rugs and carpeting in seconds.
  • Superbly maneuverable, the Swivel+ Steering System™ lets you easily glide around corners and into difficult places for an easy, fast and thorough clean.
  • The exclusive Stair Grip™ feature keeps the canister body upright and securely in place while the stairs get cleaned, for solid performance and increased safety.
  • Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America approval means this vacuum effectively removes allergens from carpets while limiting the release of dust and dander into the air.
  • 6-in-1 Handle Technology serves-up a power nozzle and floor brush, a large Pet PowerMate™, a smaller pet upholstery tool, a horsehair dust brush and a crevice tool for tight spots.

Love it
I don't know why anyone would not like this vacuum. It is easy to use to clean the entire house. I love the swivel head, the longer hose, the retractable cord and the onboard attachments. The power is great which is completely and easily controlled. You can switch from carpet to solid flooring with the slide of a switch on the handle. Easy to dust with the built in attachment but if it gets in your way you can easily remove it. It is probably the most versatile vacuum I have ever owned. I have had it now for about 3-4 weeks. I vacuum often and I can't think of anything I don't like about it. I owned a Kenmore canister years ago and when the power head stopped working after several years I changed to the Hoover Wind Tunnel upright. I am happy to be back to a canister. Don't get me wrong if all you want is to take out an upright and do a quick vacuum of your rug an upright is fine. If you really want convenience to clean your entire house...I have a basement too...then I just don't think you can go wrong with this. I did buy the extended warranty which I never do just because of some of the reviews. I originally bought the lower priced version, which came in purple, but the next day exchanged it for this one (my husband talked me into it because he knows how picky I am about vacuuming). He was right. I seriously tell him after every time I use it..."thank you honey, I love this vacuum".

Broke right after warranty expired
This vacuum comes with a 1-year warranty. One year and two months after buying it, a small part broke (the pedal that raises or lowers the brush for vacuuming carpets of different depths). One month later, all power stopped flowing to the end of the vacuum wand, meaning that the brush head and light stopped functioning entirely. It now only works to vacuum tile or wood floors, not carpet, though it has seen only light use (vacuuming one small apartment). Had it not broken so soon, I might have rated it highly, as on the whole it previously functioned well. It seems to have good suction, and it also has useful attachments, especially the PetMate attachment for upholstery. I did have some quibbles (it can be hard to get it to stand up without falling over; the latch that controls the length of the wand only works in one direction, leading it to extend annoyingly at times), but on the whole I was happy. Until it broke. If you buy this, be sure to buy the extended protection plan.

Clumsy

I've always had Kenmore vacuums and been very pleased. I read the reviews and thought I'd give this one a try anyway. This isn't Sears quality. The built in tool idea is great but would work better if the attachments were well made. They are pure plastic with no metal reinforcement. The crevice tool is hard to get off and I was afraid I would break it if I continued to pull on it. The dust brush and upholstery cleaner is mounted right on the handle, but the wand has to be disconnected to get to it. On the plus side, it is as quiet as any vacuum I've heard. The suction isn't as powerful as I expected. But it does the job. The long cord and the long extension rod are very nice. But if my old one still worked, I'd take it back in a heartbeat. I would only recommend this if the buyer was fully aware of the features.

Poor Design

I unfortunately have the same complaint as many on this vacuum . The extension wand stopped provide power to the light or the brushes before a year. I have come to the conclusion that wand cannot take the wear and tear of extending it during use and contracting for storage. This model worked very well at first but with it's durability issues it's not worth the price. There should be a recall on the wand. I will be bringing back to the store for hopefully a replacement for the wand.

disappointing

we purchased one because the older one was 20+ years old and felt it was time to renew. This one was a dud from the beginning. It kept shorting out. We tried several different outlets, it would start then stop. We returned it to the store within a week of purchase, they gave us another one with the option to get our money back. We preferred to get a replacement. This one sometimes works, the vibra beater will come on but the actual suction motor doesn't come on unless you hit the the canister. I have used many Sears products without a problem. I will be taking the second one back also for a complete refund. Sorry Sears, I cannot rate this one other than a dud.

Loved but now hate

I too had a the old Kenmore Canister Progressive for 11 years. Like many others posted, it worked great. It recently started to have issues, so I purchased this new Progressive Canister in Red. LOVED it at first, but just shy of 6 months the wand has broken. It gets power, but does not turn on to carpet. Seems this is an issue with this vacuum. At least mine is still covered under warranty. I use about once a week. Hoping Sears repairs for no charge.

VERY disappointed!!!

I've had 2 Kenmore canister vacs in the past, they worked great and lasted a long time. I decided it was time to get a new one and even upgraded to the red one. Since I purchased it 2 months ago I have had it replaced twice for "defects" in the wand. Like the other reviews electricity was not reaching the powermate. I figured third time's a charm but no such luck! 2 weeks after receiving my second replacement it happened again!! It's passed the timeframe to receive my money back ($400). My mother purchased the same red vac and has had it replaced twice and repaired once in 3 months. I will never buy a Kenmore again! If I could rate it less than one star I would. They should be yellow instead of red because they are all LEMONS!!

Do not buy this Vacuum

I could not select anything lower than a 1, or I would have. The telescoping wand has poorly made cable strip assembly. We paid for one repair. Now the assembly has failed again, along with the cable strip connector and the connector spring. We will now be purchasing a different a different brand vacuum cleaner. Do not purchase this vacuum.

Shame on Your Sears

I purchased this too replace a hand me down 1980 Sears Powermate Canister Vacuum Cleaner from my mom. Thank goodness I didn't discard the 1980 Sears Powermate Vacuum...It's still going strong after 34 years but thought I would "upgrade" NOT...HORRIBLE Machine this 116.21714 is. Where is the Sears quality that was in the 60's, 70's, 80's, even 90's? This vacuum quit working after 2 months, yes 2 months! No pets either, just a once or twice a week vacuuming in a 2500 sf home. Mix of hardwood and carpeting, stairs too. The wand won't power the powermate any longer, the rear wheel on the canister keeps falling off, the wand light burned out, canister part of the vacuum gets really hot as well. The attachments are really a joke. I have a 4-piece attachment set with my 1980 canister and love them. These attachments are useless. The mini powermate is the only value add to this machine, it does do the stairs really well. Will it quit working though? Don't know. So, I have a $400.00 vacuum that can only be used to vacuum stairs as the other attachments are useless and the Powermate no longer "powers" up. I can't even use my older powermate on this one because the connections are totally different. I should have gone with the $149 model as I see better reviews for that one. Stay away until they bring back the original canister design and beef up the quality again. I'll stick with my 1980 powermate canister model for now, it's lasted 34 years so hopefully it will continue on another 34 years... Get it together Sears!

Kenmore Progressive Vacuum

I had an older model of this vacuum for close to 10 years, and so when I needed to replace it, I first thought of the newer version of same vacuum. Upon checking Cinsumer Reports, I found the Progressive was given the highest rating. That clenched the deal. I bought the new Progressive, and am very happy that I did. It is easy to use, lightweight, and performs very well.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
