The instructions with the maker are not as accurate as need be. Here's the order in which to set up and use this item. FIRST- fill the resevoir with water, per booklet. THEN plug it in. DON'T keep the lid on the travel cup, let the coffee maker fill the cup without putting the lid on. Press the button START (using thumb, press button firmly, keep your other hand behind the machine, behind the base). LISTEN AND FEEL THE BUTTON CLICK (it might take a firm push with your entire thumbprint to hear and feel the click). Let the machine cycle and empty all of the water from the reservoir. Toss the water that has flowed thru the maker. UNPLUG THE COFFEE MAKER! Let the maker cool for 5 minutes, opening the lid of the machine to let steam out. THEN, you can make your drinkable cup of coffee by filling the resevoir with water, put the coffee in the filter, PLUG IN, then press the START button. This procedure is for original set-up. This will work every time. Melitta filter size #1 is too small as a liner for the permanent filter. The coffee will still run over into the filter when brewing and cleaning it out will be as much trouble as without a filter. AND Melitta filters are about $3-4 bucks for 60. I am cheap, so I took a regular coffee filter (#2 or 3), fold in half, cut that size in half, then fold the cut side over twice, staple about 1 1/2" from top edge, then fold the pointed end up and over twice, then staple. This is clumsy, but it works. In general, follow these instructions for set-up and you have a quick and very good cup to go!!
I bought this on Clearance at my local Sears store and plugged it in the day after. I love this machine and how quickly it brews. I have not had any issues with the cleaning cycle or anything as people have been stating. It came with a nice travel stainless steel mug that isn't too cheap looking and holds in the heat well. I also love how small and compact it is as well, it doesn't take up much space at all. The only thing I didn't care for was the washable filter, yes its small and easy to wash but I wish Kenmore made little paper filters to fit inside so you can throw them away instead.

At first, I had the same issue as other people here who said that that it doesn't work when you press Start. You need to press the button very firmly. You're probably not pressing hard enough. It works like a charm! I'm enjoying a cup as I type. Delicous and fast! I will definitely recommend this to my friends.
I got this for my Dad after returning a similar Black & Decker that was a huge disappointment. It's just him and he wanted something small and convenient instead of a cup from McD's or the gas station. He says it's much better than the first one and easy to deal with. The cup is metal not plastic.
The first one I got went through the cleaning cycle fine, but it would not come on again. I returned it to the store and got a replacement. The second one would not even do a cleaning cycle. Dead on arrival. The mug is nice. Maybe I'll just keep it. I did find a great deal on some Land's End items when I returned the first unit, so my ordeal was not a total loss.
first, the coffee maker and travel mug I got out of the box don't look exactly the same as what is pictured here. not a deal breaker, but I don't appreciate inaccuracy with advertising. then, I tried running a pot of cold water through it first, per the directions. as soon as it was plugged in the "on" button lit up all by itself without being touched, a puff of smoke came out of the back, and that was it. tried over and over to get it to do something, anything. wouldn't turn on, wouldn't make coffee. read the directions over and over, made sure I was doing everything right. basically, Kenmore makes a coffee maker that doesn't last long enough to make even one cup of coffee. taking it back tomorrow when sears decides to open their doors, so at least i'll get my money back and will only have wasted my time. the thing is, when Kenmore can't make something as simple and basic as a coffee maker, they become a brand I will not even consider for much more expensive items.
Bought this at the last minute for my father for Christmas. After reading the negative reviews I was half expecting this to not work after the first day. However it works wonderfully and according to my father it makes great coffee with very little effort. It is very simple to operate. I am so glad I took a chance on this item.
