I got this for my Dad after returning a similar Black & Decker that was a huge disappointment. It's just him and he wanted something small and convenient instead of a cup from McD's or the gas station. He says it's much better than the first one and easy to deal with. The cup is metal not plastic.
The first one I got went through the cleaning cycle fine, but it would not come on again. I returned it to the store and got a replacement. The second one would not even do a cleaning cycle. Dead on arrival. The mug is nice. Maybe I'll just keep it. I did find a great deal on some Land's End items when I returned the first unit, so my ordeal was not a total loss.
first, the coffee maker and travel mug I got out of the box don't look exactly the same as what is pictured here. not a deal breaker, but I don't appreciate inaccuracy with advertising. then, I tried running a pot of cold water through it first, per the directions. as soon as it was plugged in the "on" button lit up all by itself without being touched, a puff of smoke came out of the back, and that was it. tried over and over to get it to do something, anything. wouldn't turn on, wouldn't make coffee. read the directions over and over, made sure I was doing everything right. basically, Kenmore makes a coffee maker that doesn't last long enough to make even one cup of coffee. taking it back tomorrow when sears decides to open their doors, so at least i'll get my money back and will only have wasted my time. the thing is, when Kenmore can't make something as simple and basic as a coffee maker, they become a brand I will not even consider for much more expensive items.
Bought this at the last minute for my father for Christmas. After reading the negative reviews I was half expecting this to not work after the first day. However it works wonderfully and according to my father it makes great coffee with very little effort. It is very simple to operate. I am so glad I took a chance on this item.
I am the only coffee drinker in the household, and I drink only 1 to 2 cups in the AM. Also, I grind the beans myself just before using. I have been using a Krups coffee maker that made a minimum of 4 cups, but that wasted a lot of coffee. This single serve brewer is perfect - you can use loose grounds, or a 'soft pack' of coffee. I'm not sure which 'soft pack' coffees can be used, as the Kuerig "K Cup" packs would not work, but that isn't a feature I cared for anyway. This machine allows me to grind up just a few beans, put them in the removable/cleanable basket, and make the coffee to my taste without waste. It has worked for the two days I've had it, and is very quick; so I recommend it.

Put everything in, plugged it in, started making coffee before I even pushed the button. Nice cuppa. Unfortunately, that is the only time it "worked". Loaded it up the next morning... deadski. Nada. No power light, no coffee. Returning in dismay - Kenmore used to be THE brand I could depend on.
