The telescoping wand slips out of its notch with normal push and pull pressure. The bar that the wand length adjust button snaps into is made of flexible plastic - (connection wand, lower #17,I believe). It appears to be too flexible allowing the length selection button to slip out. Since you are using the wand most of the time, it is an annoying reminder of a design defect.
Powerful on berber carpet and hardwood floors. However, I am forced to use my old Sears vac on regular carpets. It does not have the regular upholstery tool-the one that comes with it is a brush combo and is too powerful for my upholstery--once again, I am required to use my old vac. I don't like the crevice tool on the handle. Also, this tool is too short. I am still deciding about the floor brush--powermate combo. All-in-all I would not buy it again and I would not recommend it. The vac is too expensive for so many issues.
The suction is excellent. I have mostly hardwood floors and I love the pop out bare floor tool. There is a problem using this vacuum on my large area carpet as it does not adjust high enough to push without great effort. It sticks tight unless the handle is tipped down to 10" above the carpet. Poor design. For carpet no good.
Twenty years ago I purchased a Kenmore Canister Vacuum and loved it. So, naturally, when it came time to purchase a new one I was looking for something similar. I chose the Crossover Canister Vacuum and the more I use it the more pleased I am that I bought it.
Vacuums very well, and picks up well as to the heavy pushing that it takes try stretching the wand to the highest pull out which I found makes it easier to handle. I replaced my old Panasonic vacuum with this one and they are comparable.

Firstly, I own the bottom of the line Lime Green Canister I purchased last year for $99.99 and that machine is way more user friendly and has less bells/whistles than the $600 Elite Canister. I also own a 1980 Sears Best Powermate Canister Vacuum I'm still using. With that said...here's my review... The first machine I brought home was dead out of the box...no power to the PowerMate and the vacuum would only turn on if the wand was attached..disconnect the wand and the machine powered off, yet no power to the brush roller...vacuum also had a weird burning smell. Mind you I hadn't even used it...I did bring back to Sears and they exchanged...BUT they were shocked that there was an electrical issue...I spend well over an hour watching 4 salespeople attempt to make this thing work... I brought the second machine home and it's working; however on wall-to-wall carpeting in my upstairs, it's virtually impossible to push the PowerMate. I have tried EVERYTHING, highest setting for height adjustment and even the lower power for suction...this thing will give you a hernia to push on carpeting...I agree with the other reviewers, if you have pile carpet, it's a BIG NO to this vacuum. Low nap/berber like the store had this thing propels across the carpet without any effort... The suction is great and the bare floor tool works great on the my downstairs and stairs with hardwood. The attachments are not that great, I do not like them. I like the older Kenmore canister vacuums with the 4-piece attachment set. The cord is super long and that's great. I've had for a week but will be bringing back to Sears...I'm not impressed with this vacuum at all and considering the price, I expected more. I'll stick with my 1980's machine and $99.99 Lime Green canister for now...
I was looking for a canister vacuum with strong powerful suction power to lift dirt in dirty places. I first tried the Kenmore 21614 which was top rated by Consumer Reports but was not impressed with the suction power it had. It was not as strong as an older Electrolux Oxygen EL6988D that I had so I immediately returned the 21614 to Sears the same day! Then I saw this newer model 21814 that said it had a 20% stronger motor and I decided to give it a try. I was immediately happy as soon as I turned it on and felt how powerful the suction power on this model was over the mid-line Kenmores. It works great. As usual though it is made of flimsy feeling plastics and even though it says it has a "stair step stopper" underneath I found that it does not even stop the canister from rolling down the stairs when I tried to rest it on my carpeted lined stairs to vacuum. The canister slipped and rolled/fell down the stairs! Useless stair step stopper, but everything else so far seems to work great. It is still new less than a week old with me, but I think it should hold up since I don't vacuum a lot. Just occasionally so any vac should last a long time with me. If you are looking for a high end strong motored vac, this is one that you should look at. Recommended.
