All in all, this unit is just fine for the average single-family home. If you're a Do-it-Yourself kind of homeowner (such as myself), make sure you analyze all your pipe sizings before you jump in. Sears usually sells a kit with the proper connectors to make your hook-up super easy (only in-store however), but my Sears didn't have any kits, so I did a little research....
What I found was the maker of the connectors - Falcon Stainless. For most installs, they make an absolutely PERFECT solution. It's a corrugated stainless steel tube with a 3/4" female nut on one end (for typical house piping) and a 1" female nut on the other (for the softener hookup). It was almost too easy. They also make a 1" x 1" connector as well if your house piping requires it.
So if you can't find that kit in your Sears, I highly recommend calling up Falcon and ordering their connectors. Really, even a total novice could easily plumb their own installation using them. Here's their web address - www.softenerconnectors.com
Hope this helps!

We had the first one for many, many years. It didn't even have shelter and just kept on going. When it finally completely quit we missed that everything is easier to clean. Also were aware that in this old house it was easier on the plumbing to soften the water. The toilets used to clean up so easy but had to use pumice stone. Glad to have another, sorry we waited so long.
When our Kenmore water softener died we purchased this Kenmore to replace the other. We are very pleased with this model. Our other one did not have a light in the tank and this being in a dark garage is very helpful to have. This softener works very well and we are very pleased with the softness of our water. If and when it no longer works we will again purchase a Kenmore water softener.
I love this water softener. It shows me when the salt is low and readout is easy. Its all one unit and easy to program. I have hard water and the salt level in tank does not disappear as did my former (not a Kenmore) softener.

dose not regenerate by itself. I have to regenerate manually every time. I wished I had rebuilt my old unit. It was not a sears and it work great for 20 years. I got this one on sale but it was one of there best but it is just junk to me. I am single and away most of summer so I did not realized this was not functioning until this winter and now it is too late to get fixed under warranty, it is now 14 months old also on my old unit it had a separate tub for salt and you never had to worry about bridging salt in the tank. Every time I regenerate I have to break up the salt. I use Morton's salt pellets which always work great for me but not in this unit. I am going to try and program it for once a month generation but I will have to change it manually every spring and fall.
This softener works great even with iron in this area. I live in Florida where most wells have high iron content in the water. Easy install, have had it for about 3 years but it burned out the Power Adapter and Circuit Board. Bought both for about $250 from Sears parts Direct online, only place where I could find these parts. Fair enough, but the power adapter keeps blowing out every month for no apparent reason. Have bought 3 already at about $50 each. The new circuit board seems to be holding up so far. I found out that it's blowing out a tiny thermal fuse in the adapter that seems to be inadequate for this application because it happens even in cold weather or with a surge protector. WTF! As a tinkerer I managed to replace the original fuse with another 5 amp fuse from the auto parts store. Very difficult to do but so far it's been working OK but not sure if it blows the new fuse if it will also blow the new circuit board. Sears needs to address this problem because it's unfair to consumers. This system needs a sturdy power supply that doesn't blow out so often. The water softener does a good job keeping the water fairly free of those nasty orange iron stains.
I bought the Extra High Efficiency model to replace a previous Kenmore water softener that I used for 17 years and was still working. I chose Kenmore because I was happy with the previous one and because I became very familiar with the maintenance and occasional repairs. Kenmore parts are very easy to find and this water softener design is simple enough to do it yourself. The install was plug-and-play. I kept the old plumbing and by-pass valve, I just replaced the O-rings. If I would have used the new by-pass valve I would have had to just reposition the flexible pipes about one inch higher because of the added new adapters. I didn't see the need to do it. The set up is extremely easy. The digital display is adequate but functional (it never dims, I wonder why it was designed this way). The overall design/appearance of the tank is very pleasing. The water softener works as advertised. I would definitely recommend to a friend.
