Kenmore Hybrid Water Softener Improves Taste, Smell, Feel
The Kenmore Elite hybrid water softener home filter provides premium protection for your family and gives you freedom from ever changing a filter again. Whether you're tired of over chlorinated city water or live in an area with a high mineral content, this system will let you enjoy crystal clear drinking water, dishes without spots and appliances with less build-up. The softener does wonders for people with sensitive skin, too. An extra layer of carbon works to filter out impurities that a softener alone misses.
The Kenmore hybrid water softener is easy to install with minimal plumbing skills. It's easy to maintain, too. Fill it with up to 200 pounds of salt and the softener will regenerate automatically. There's no filter to replace, eliminating a maintenance hassle.

I think the unit itself is very nice and was very easy to install. There are a couple caveats:
1.) The water filter features appears to just be activated charcol mixed in with the resin. This doesn't seem to justify the extra cost from the next model down the kenmore softener line.
2.) The information LCD has an always-on backlight with no apparent way to turn it off.
3.) The salt level must be manually set but it is a very easy process
I called Kenmore help line with one question when I installed this softener. I didn't see where the manual specified exactly when to add the salt to the new unit before programing the set up for the machine and such. They were very helpful and put me on the right track. Today I am to take a sample of my water to the Yakima Sears store where I purchased my softener, to have them analyze my water for hardness. (thank you Sears for providing that service free of charge for us) I will then be able to set the machine for the recommended setting for water hardness. So far the softener had been fine. After purchasing it three weeks ago and procrastinating all this time because I was afraid of going out on a limb and installing it myself, I finely installed it yesterday which replaced an old Culligan water softener that was apparently not working. The change of machines was so much easier than I expected and now kick myself for my procrastination. The water now seems to be so much better. There is no odor to the water and it seems to be not near as hard to me; kind of a milder water if that makes any sense. I asked two other family members to compare the water and they experienced the same feelings, that this softener is doing it's job. Time will tell, but with Kenmore, I have found that time does tell a positive outcome with their products. I am satisfied with this Elite Hybird Water Softener.

This product works as stated. The family loves what it does to the water. I would have rated this product excellent if only for the instructions were a little clearer on the start up of the product. It leaves you to your own devices and that is where the trouble begins. Other than that this is an excellent product that should be in every home!

There was an additional $75 charge for installation from the company that installed the water softner that I thought should have been covered in the initlal $250 installation that I was charged at Sears. I think I should have been told that there might be additional charges.

Installation of water softener was very easy, basic plumbing skills needed. Built a cover for the unit because had to install outside. Water softener works well, we can all tell a huge difference in water quality and makes cleaning easier less water spots and less soap utilization.
We purchased this softener over a year ago and installed it less than a year ago. Since installation, it has never regenerated automatically. We have to do it manually, and then when it is finished the water is very salty for a time. I have set the pre wash/rinse to no avail. It is still salty when finishes regeneration. Tried calling Sears tech center and get their "customer avoidance system' which by the way, works far better than the water softener. No more Kenmore appliances for us.
This unit is replacing a previous Kenmore water softener, which has worked fine over the years. In fact, I have had 5 Kenmore softeners in different homes over the last 30 years and all have worked well. I chose this unit for the carbon filter feature. The water in the Phoenix area is not the best tasting and the carbon filter feature indeed makes a difference. I noticed one reviewer said the filter lasts one year and was unhappy. The owners manual clearly states the carbon filter is designed to last approximately 10 years. I found the unit worked great as soon as the first regeneration was completed. Unlike others, I hired a plumber to install our new Kenmore. The process was about two hours and that included the removal of our old unit. I am pleased with this softener and I expect it will be as reliable as the ones I have owned in the past.
I purchased and installed this unit as part of a remodel of our new house. I wanted soft water and considered the filtering an added bonus. It has been in place for several months and works extremely well. Our water is soft and there is no chlorine smell that usually accompanies municipal water. It makes our reverse osmosis drinking water system work great! It is very efficient in its use of salt. Highly recommended.
We have enjoyed our hydrid softener over the past few months. It is great to notice that the amount of soap needed is much less with soft water. The hookup was easy and took less than a day from start to finish. We put our water softener in the garage between the well water tank and the water heater. The little light on the top that lets you know when to add salt is excellent. It blinks a bright blue light in the garage so that keeping track of the salt level is a breeze. We left the settings for softening the water on the factory setting. Took water sample of well water and water after passing through the softener to the pool supply. They tested the water and the calcium was much lower (normal) but not zero. The water spots are no longer visible in the kitchen on the granite and in the shower. We can even wash the car without water spots! UPDATE: It has been about a year and the softener still works great. There have been no issues and it does not consume much salt.
