This cooktop filled the bill for our island. Did not want a hood over the island, so downdraft was the way to go. Nice alternative to more expensive models. Seems solid and well made.
We installed the 36" cooktop during a complete kitchen remodel. We went with all stainless steel Kenmore Elite appliances. Having removed a wall and building a raised bar for eating, the cooktop was installed on the countertop below the raised bar. This was one of the few cooktops with a downdraft vent system as we didn't want a vent hood hanging in the middle of the kitchen. The cooktop is beautiful and the downdraft is one of the best as for venting suction. I vented the cooktop through the 1/2 wall supporting the raised bar countertop. Using 6" to 4" duct reducers I managed to install the ductwork through the wall to the outside of the house. We've had the cooktop now since last October and several observations from experience have led to some 'Second Thoughts'. (#1)-Although the cooktop is gorgeous when clean, it's surface is like black glass and we've found that if not careful, it scratches very easily. DO NOT slide pans on the surface. #1a-We've had to experiment with different cooktop cleaners that won't cause streaking or dull finishes. When clean and shiny, it is great to look at. (#2)-The raised burner control knobs on the right side add to the cleaning hassle. I've resorted to removing the knobs for ease of cleaning to ensure getting underneath them (#3)-When using large skillets or pans on the right side burners, the handles invariably extend over and beyond the control knobs, making accessing them and the downdraft speed control **** more difficult. (#4)-The downdraft vent works very well. When boiling water, the strength of the downdraft is very obvious. The vent grate is not easy to remove and is heavy so caution is advised when removing to clean. The grease filter is easily removable. (#5)-The downdraft motor extends below the cabinet 15-18" and is roughly in the middle of the cabinet so this makes utilizing this cabinet for storage somewhat problematic. I did install 2-stainless-steel sliding cabinet drawers on the floor of the cabinet and these have worked very well to store pots, pans, lids, a Kitchen Aid upright mixer, etc. Overall, we're pleased with our choice and the product quality. We wish we would have been advised how easily this surface would scratch as our GE Profile Stove that it replaced had a different cooktop that cleaned more easily and didn't show the scratches as easily.

Fit form and function rated 5 Replaces 28 year old Thermador cook n' vent. Needed downdraft that would fit existing countertop and ducting. Researched extensively. This was best fit and best reviewed by Consumer Reports. Required minimal adjustment to countertop and fit to existing 10" duct, upgrade of circuit to 50 amp (fortunately existing wiring was oversized and capable of 70 amp so only had to switch the breaker). Visually stunning. Heats very quickly. Turbo boil burner very fast. Simmer burner simmered thick pasta sauce perfectly. Controls simple. I have been a fan of Sears and bought most of my appliances from them over last 30 hears. HOWEVER. Delivery was totally botched. Unit was sent to store in another state. Installer would not pick-up (350 mile trip). After many calls, being told delivery delayed 2/6 750 miles away, I located, picked up (220 mile trip) dropped in and hooked up temporarily. DO NOT BUY ONLINE. Total disarray. Go to a store!
I installed this myself back in December of 2011--it was VERY easy and went in with no problems ( I would consider myself an advanced do it yourselfer). Since then I've been pleased overall. Pros: Flexible, powerful burners, downdraft is SUPER powerful, easy to clean Cons: Stainless showing a few scratches, burners slow to cool (no different than ANY radiant top) One issue that's not really a complaint, but I want to bring up, is that it can be challenging at first to syncronize the temperatures from one burner to the other. For example, "5" on one burner might seem hotter than "5" on another burner. This could also be due to using different cookware, etc., and the burner size. Having used the unit for 5-6 months, I have become a lot more familiar with the temperature responsiveness across the unit--it's just a learning curve. Don't get frustrated if the first few times you overshoot your desired temperature and have to pull a pan off the heat temporarily. I would recommend this unit to a friend. In fact, I actually have.
The cooktop heats very quickly and it is an attractive update to the kitchen. That being said, you may want to avoid the product if you are remodeling. I paid for Sears to install the unit. The installer would not complete the installation because he said it would take him another couple of hours to complete the job. Sears could correct the problem by providing universal installation hardware. I am forced to pay another installer to complete the job.
