WORKS AS ADVERTISED
This unit installed easily and works as advertised in the ductless configuration. I'm a little put out that I had to go out and buy an additional $35 worth of filters and light bulbs to complete the installation, but I knew that going in. I replaced a 19 year-old super-cheapie Broan hood that was built into the house. This Kenmore unit fit precisely into the same space. The mounting screws were in the same place, the electrical line was in the same place, and the space for mounting it was exactly the same. There was no cutting at all, and I never used a hammer. It seems one factory in Mexico must be making 99% of the under-cabinet range hoods sold in America. Whether you buy Kenmore, Nu-Tone, Broan, Jenn-Air, Whirlpool or whatever, there seem to be two body styles and three internal configurations for about 220, 300 or 400 cfm, and differerent controls. Add in different colors and finishes, and you get the several hundred different permutations that are available. This hood is the same as the Broan / NuTone Allure 2, which is the nicer body style with the middle level of fan power, quieting and controls. I suppose range hood technology reached its ultimate level in the '50s, and since then there have only been variations in style, power and controls. The outside of the box told me what additional bulbs and filters I would need for the ductless configuration. Since these hoods are so standardized, I was able to buy those at Home Depot. The two light bulbs were about $7 each, and Home Depot sells the ductless charcoal filter kit for about $21. Take the model number with you when you go to the store. Expect to spend 30 minutes preparing the hood for installation. It's simple; the directions walk you through it, but you do have to partially disassemble it. Make sure you have a towel or a piece of cardboard laying over your cook top. You will need to rest the hood on your cook top, and you don't want to scratch up your brand new hood before you even install it. The mounting screws of the old and new unit were in the same place. I just loosened the old ones a little, slid the old unit forward until the "keyholes" were free of the mounting screws, and slipped the new unit in on the same screws. An earlier reviewer complained about a lack of a plug. Who plugs a range hood in? They are always hard-wired into the house. The wires into the old unit went right into the new unit; I even used the same wire nuts. So there are basically seven easy steps for a ductless installation: (1) Buy the bulbs and charcoal filters you will need. (2) Prepare the new hood according to the directions. (3) Turn the old hood on. Turn off power to it at the breaker box, which will turn it off. When the old hood goes off, you can be sure you found the right breaker and power is off. (4) Take the old unit out by disconnecting the wiring, loosening four mounting screws and sliding it out. (5) Mount the new unit on the same screws, tighten them, and then reconnect the wires. (6) Put in the filters and bulbs. The charcoal filters you bought have directions on how they are installed. (7) Turn power on at the breaker box and test. I would allow about two hours for the installation, if you are a common home owner like me. You will need a slot-head screwdriver, a phillips-head screw driver with a long shaft to tighten the mounting screws, and needle-nose pliers to wrap the ground line around the ground screw. No power tools. The unit is way more effective at pulling air up than the cheapo it replaced. It looks a whole lot better too. Wifey loves it; that's what counts. #

Be Prepared
The Kenmore Elite Hoodfan is a great unit. Be prepared to take it a part to install it. There is nothing easy about the installation. I installed the duct version and the cut outs were very difficult to remove, The light panel is hard to reinstall and the unit is heavy so holding it up to mount it took 2 people. Sears had no installation manual with the unit, but the on line manual you can get was easy. Consider a contractor or Sears installation people to do the work if your unsure,

Looks Lovely

Okay ... I used to have a microwave over my stove, but I don't like microwaves and don't use them ... so it was unplugged and used as a cabinet for my teas. Being unplugged, I then did not have the use of the light or the fan that was a built in part of the microwave ... NOW I have a hood with great lighting (3 different levels) and a fan (keeping my smoke alarm from going off). The fan is a bit louder then I had anticipated on both the middle and high setting ... but then it is something that I have not been used to. Love the Lighting!!! and the way the hood looks overall.

excellent

Same hood as Broan but with Kenmore Elite logo on it. You do always need to have fan on when cooking or condensation does form underneath even with small pot on. Did not have that with old cheap style, but then when cooking exhaust fan should be on. Super quite do not know it is on when on low. Lighting is great, low is like a night light and high is supper bright, normally only use medium setting. Have had for over a year and works great.

Very clean, quiet, and effective!

We purchased this hood as we did not have the option of a range hood with a duct. This was godsend to fight the grease and smoke of the kitchen. The product is so simple to use and is so effective at doing what a range hood should! The halogen lights are very bright and illuminate the stove top quiet well. We really like the 3 light and fan settings to meet your needs. The filters are very efficient and seldom need changing or cleaning. This is a must for someone who needs a ductless hood. It does however come with the capability to be use with duct as well. Great product!

Easy Install, Works Well

I have had this installed and running for about 3 weeks now.  I really like the unit.  I looks good.  The lines of the unit are not the traditional hood lines which allow the lights to be up higher.  It also means that I don't have to duck under and around the hood to see what I am cooking on the back of the stove (I am 6'3")  With my previous unit, I was constantly ducking under the hood to look at the food on the back burners.  The fan works very well on medium and high while being significanly quieter than the fan it replaced.  Can you hear the fan in the kitchen- yes.  Can you hear the fan across the house - no. My wife and I can actually carry on a conversation in the kitchen with the fan on high and we don't have to scream at each other.  I grade myself as moderately mechaniclly inclined.  Fo me, installation was pretty easy.  The instructions were well written and the pictures really helped.  My install was replacing an existing rear ducted unit. Total time installing unit from unpacking to turning the power back on was 1 hour 15 minutes.

What could be better -

Out of the box installation is set up for a ductless install.  I was doing a ducted install so I needed a few extra steps to convert over.

I don't know how well the fan actually works on low speed.  I don't see a lot of steam being sucked into the unit on low.  But to be fair, if I am turning it on, I need it on high.

Light bulbs were not included.  You will need (2) 50W Par 20 Halogen bulbs for this range hood.

Looks good--can't expect much from non-ducted installation

I bought this mostly for the looks and to match my stove an refrigerator. I thought the price is a little high. My kitchen fan hookup does not vent outside so I was not expecting high performance from this fan due to that limitation, and it cannot really clear the cooking exhaust. I do like the halogen lights. They really light up the cooking surface and my tile backsplash. Fan is a little loud.

Be informed before you self install

We had this delivered to the store & picked it up. Told salesman we would install it.  He did not inform us it does not come with a power cord, told us (wrongly), it would be a simple replacement install.  Unboxed it & find power cord & filters old seperately, but NOT available at the appliance store or a main store, have to order them by phone or online & wait.  After sale, went back to order these parts & same salesman totally ignored us!  Halogen bulbes are $13.00 EACH, can't use without filters which are on back order. so if you install yourself, do not rely on your sales person, when you read the booklet, THEN you find out you need other parts before you can install it.  Also, holes do not line up with existing holes in cabinet, so be prepared to drill more holes in your cabinets.

Quiet and well-made, installation takes patience

Switching from white to stainless steel appliances, I installed the unit myself as a replacement for the range hood that came with the 1992-built house.  The installation was more trouble than I had expected, since it's necessary to disassemble most of it and re-configure to fit the existing duct.  The included instructions are pretty clear and very useful.  The quality is much better than the old one and it's quieter too.  The three speed fan pulls more air than I'm used to when on medium or high but makes less noise than the one it replaced.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Looks and works great, heavy to install by yourself.

It looks and works great.  It is made by Broan.  Only difference is it has the Kenmore Elite logo on it.  Three settings for light is great never new how dark it was with our old one.  Three settings for fan is also nice.  Set up of the fan is off to the left side in the unit and when boiling water on right side it does not suck up as good as it does on the left side.  Unit should have had fan centered in the middle of the unit.  If you place a piece of paper on the left side it holds the paper there.  If you try to place it only on the right side it will not hold.  If you place the paper on the left side then the right side it holds both up there but as soon as you remove the left side, the right falls again.  Basically it means not as good suction on right side and simmering sould be one there and cooking or boiling on the left side.  Just a change of habbit for a right handed person to get use to. Never had an issue with vapor condensing and dripping as others stated but I do have ducted vent so moisture is taken out of the house.

I would recommend this product to a friend.
