Purchased this grill 18 months ago. Salesperson assured me it would last as this was a major concern of mine. 18 months later the bottom of the grill box has completely rusted out and the grill is now useless. Sears customer service and the store where I purchased the grill told me this happens (as the bottom is galvanized) and its out of warranty. There is no replacement for this piece except to replace the entire grill head ($349). Save your $400 and purchase a product which will last and from a company which will stand by its products. Do not buy this grill from Sears!
It appears that the lifespan of a Sears Kenmore Grill is two years or less. My Kenmore Model 148.16154210 is approximately two years old and the bottom of the burner box on my unit is rusted out completely. I burn off the burners, let cool down, wire brush the cooking grate(s), and cover it EVERY time I use it! I had a Weber for 20 years and only replaced a few parts (easy and cost effective with a Weber) while I had it. I decided I needed a larger cooking surface with more burners than my Weber and gave it away and went shopping for a new grill. Obviously I made the mistake of buying this piece of junk instead of another Weber (Kenmore was less expensive...duh) or I would not be wasting my time emailing a company who doesn't care. Care and maintenance will not solve poor quality. The only care and maintenance effective for a Sears product is: Take care and do not buy a Sears product, and the proper maintenance for it (if you miss the care part like as the disgruntled customers on this site obviously did) is to throw it out with the rest of the garbage when it disintegrates after an unreasonably short period of time/use.
Don't purchase this grill, there are several reports of problems with the ignition device which are very true along with issues with the burners. One nearly set my husband on fire. To be fair we go this grill already assembled, but whoever tested the grill must either not know what they were doing or lied about testing it. Once we got it home, the ignition would not click on and my husband fired up the grill and discovered the hard way that one of the four burners was faulty and the flames were so high, he jumped back before being seriously burned.
We bought this grill last summer and decided to pay more because we wanted something that would last. It has been an enormous disappointment as in a one-year time period the entire bottom rusted out of the grill...literally rotted out and fell to the base of the grill! One year!!! Don't waste your money on this one. My husband had to fabricate a metal piece to fit into the bottom because they do not sell this replacement part solo. The way the grill is built, you have to purchase the entire box, which is not cost effective at all.
I bought this Kenmore "ELITE" grill from Kmart May of 2010. From the time we bought the grill until just a few minutes ago, it has been under a cover unless it is being used. In the winter it was stored in a shed or in the basement when we moved. Well, this summer I noticed rusting on the INSIDE UNDERNEATH of the grill. And I just tried moving it and the ENTIRE bottom fell out (it was all rusted completely out!) Mind you at the beginning of the summer it was rusting by the end of the summer we can't even use the grill... And even this entire summer we kept it covered especially after seeing the rust at the beginning because we were afraid it would fall completely apart while we were cooking! Which is what happened today when we were getting ready to cook on it! Elite??? I THINK NOT! If this is "Elite" I would HATE to see what a "normal" grill is... I will never spend another $400 on a Kenmore Grill again...
