The item is very sturdy and has many choices of use for both washer & dryer. The motor has a deep, powerful sound. It's right across from my bedroom behind bifolds and the sound doesn't bother me. If this unit were in an appartment (and the walls were thin), I can understand why some comments mentioned the noise. I didn't realize how junky my old unit was until I was forced to buy a new one. I highly recommend this machine.
This unit broke 3 times while under warranty and was able to be repaired. Unit finally had a broken transmission after it was out of warranty after under 4 years. $1000 to repair. The dryer lint trap does not line up well with the machine, letting a lot of lint into the inside of the machine. I would recommend the laundromat over this set.
We bought this laundry center about 10 years ago to use in the house that our daughter was renting. She used it for the five years that she lived there. Then we moved into that house for two years, using it on an almost-daily basis to do the laundry for our family--two adults and two grown boys. After we moved out, we gave the machine to our son to use in his house, and he has used it regularly ever since. That's a lot of laundry! Maybe they've changed the design since we bought our machine, but we haven't had ANY problems with that machine. We have had a Maintenance Protection Agreement on it since we bought it, but we've only had the usual yearly checkups, with no issues. I've been pretty good about keeping the lint filter and keeping the ductwork clean (occasional vacuuming)--that's a bit irritating, but necessary. Now that we're in a new home, we have been using a Kenmore HE Front-Loader set (working well, with no issues!), but we're going to downsize and get the HE version of this laundry center. Looking forward to it!
I agree with an earlier reviewer that this design must be from an eastern block country circa 1940's. It has NO frills what so ever. It's very loud and the random knocking sounds makes me think something is going to break at any second. It's ridiculously slow. (A light normal light load takes 52 minutes.) That said, I've had it for 8 months with no problems. It's installed it a condo that I rent. Because of all the bad reviews, I purchased the Sears 3 year extended warranty. Even if I was 100% pleased with it, I still wouldn't recommend it because of the automated Sears phone system. It took me over an hour to find someone that would give me the number of the salesman that sold me the machine. Please hire some real engineers and do a total redesign making it faster, quieter, more reliable, Eco-friendly, and with some modern features that stand alone machines have.

I have had this unit for 1 week after my 12 year old Kenmore unit died. Its is great. I wash about 2 loads a day. With 3 small kids it gets lots of use. I love the auto water level feature. I feel in the long run it will save on the water bill by leaving it on automatic instead of a small, medium or large load. I'm loving the fabric softener dispenser button. No more downey ball for me. Also, the dryer is huge. Has cut down on my drying big time. The only small issue is the sound it makes when it washes. I didn't even notice at first. With kids home all day all I hear are the kids so I only noticed it after we had it a few days and the kids were in bed. But its not loud enough to annoy me so to me its no big deal. I recommend this product to anyone.
I have had this unit for a week now - we've done about 8 loads of laundry. I am concerned about the noises it makes when it changes gears. The agitation cycle seems to be pretty loud as well. The dryer takes forever to dry clothing!

I have had this machine for 6 years. The level sensor system has quit woking 3 times and the water has overflowed the tub each time. Wash water runs everywhere. It appears the tube running down into the tub gets clogged up
We have been living with one of these Sears laundry centers for about 2 years. So far we have not seen any of the mechanical problems described by other reviewers, however there are problems. About once every two weeks a shirt button will get caught in the dryer tub vent screen. The shirt will twist up into a wrinkled mess, and the button will come off the shirt. It seems the square holes in the vent screen are just the right size to catch and hold a button. Very annoying. When the spin cycle engages, the machine is as noisy as a locomotive. Fortunately we can close a door to the laundry area, and at least decrease the noise. Cant imagine this in a small apartment. Other than that it seems to wash and dry fine, but I would not recommend the machine to anyone.
