plenty of space
We were looking for a smaller freezer that would work well with meat, as my husband had venison to freeze. The salesman suggested that we get a manual defrost so that the meat would not get freezer burn. So far is has worked well and is better than just having a refrigerator/freezer.

Worst freezer ever

Really shouldn't be rated with any stars at all.  Six months after I purchased this freezer and had it loaded with a side of beef, it went out.  Lost all meat and had a bloody mess to clean up.  Sears would not replace even though freezer smells like rotten meat.  Told me to wash it with soap and water (like I didn't know to do that).  Still stinks even with baking soda boxes in there.  They did give me $250 for cost of lost meat although the meat cost me $550.  Repairman had to weld something to the back of freezer and it started working again.  Needless to say, I didn't load it full of beef again.  Two months later, it is cooling but not freezing.  Doesn't even freeze bread.  Repairman coming tomorrow.  Never buying anything from Sears again unless they replace this freezer.  It is useless because I purchased it to put our sides of beef in and I won't ever trust it again.

Kenmore Upright Freezer

We just started using the freezer and find it doing it's job.  Our old Kenmore Signature Upright Frost-Free Freezer was starting to give up after 43 yrs of service.  The only thing I would change is that I didn't notice this was a manual defrost and I would have preferred a frost-free unit.  However, if this lasts us another 43 yrs, I will be ok with it :)

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Overall
Kenmore 16.7 Upright is a very good value and design.

This freezer has ample room for everything from our old chest freezer of comparable size. It has all of the important basic requirements. This design offers better organization and easier access than a chest. Our old freezer was quiet and required manual defrosting. This upright is no different. It includes an inside light and an outside amber "power on" light; both are important additions. Since the old freezer was over 30 years old, the savings on electrical consumption should gradually offset the purchase price during its life cycle..

I would recommend this product to a friend.

Great product. Great Delivery.

This freezer is a great product.   It has just the right amount of room to allow you to take advantage of bargains, and any bulk shopping you want to do.  There is also room for some summer produce.

I was worried about picking out a freezer for my mother, but I did my homework and this appeared to be a great value!  My mom has ZERO complaints!  (Perhaps a first.)

First, the delivery team was really impressive.  They did everything to my mom's high standards, taking out the old freezer, allowing my son and her to clean underneath, and bringing in the new.  She gave glowing reviews of their professionalism and cleanliness.  Such glowing remarks do not come easily.

Next the freezer is a great size and it is whisper quiet.  We have to listen to hear it.  It seals perfectly and things freeze quickly.  She loves the way the door compartments are adjustable (and so do I).  And having the "soft-freeze" compartment for the ice cream is important to my dad.

We have now had it for several months.   Even though it is manual defrost, there is really no frost building up.  The seal must be seated on their perfectly.    We love it.

Keeps cool, but lacks quality

I'm not sure if they've changed the design since we bought ours about five years ago.  Ours looks the same.

It keeps cool, but the seal is so bad that it leaks the Houston humidity in and freezes next to the door seals.  If we don't open it every week, it's frozen solid around the door and requires enough strength to open that it rips the seals a little more.  Inside the quality is also lacking since the shelves on the bottom have all fallen due to the inside dimensions changing (walls somehow got wider).  These are pretty serious issues for a simple freezer.  I expected more from Kenmore.

Cold, Quiet, large, but hard to open the door.

Went with this Freezer because the all the frost free ones seemed to have noise issues. I keep it in my laundry room which is next to my bedroom so the noise factor is relevant. Also, I feel the manual defrost is better for the food as there is less chance of freezer burn. My only issue with the unit is the door seal is too tight. It is very hard to open the door. You have to hold on to the side with one hand, and then open the door with the other. The Freezer sits on a vinyl floor and when you tug on the door handle, the whole freezer moves forward. (Even fully loaded) And if you just have closed the door, it is almost impossible to open it. We bought this to replace a chest freezer because you lose stuff in the bottom of it. And it was just a pain in the but. This one is great to store and find things. It got down to temperature in less than two hours and it has held at zero ever since.

Kenmore 16.7 upright freezer

Don't buy.....  We had it a couple of months and it started frosting up around the door.  We had Sears come out while under warranty and they said there had been a recall on this freezer and it needed more insulation in the door, which they added.  We noticed that it ran alot and was very noisy.  Then after another year it totally died.  Rather then have it repaired we purchased a GE chest freezer and had this one hauled off.    We will never buy Kenmore products again because they have been unreliable in the past 5 years.
